Heartlands – Transforming derelict mining land into an inspirational and vibrant Cornish cultural landscape

Heartlands is a community-led vision which in 2007 became the only project in England to receive BIG Lottery Living Landmarks funding. The investment of £22 million has been added to by English partnerships and Kerrier District Council. The people of Pool have had their say; development and designs are nearly done, construction begins in January 2009 and ends in April 2010. As part of the Heartlands Delivery Phase there exists exciting new opportunities for up to three artist consultants to become an integrated part of the design team in order to develop innovative and inspiring themes and features which cut across the site. Artists will be expected to work towards the fulfilment of the cultural aspirations for the site ‘to transform Cornwall’s most derelict urban area into a truly inspirational living cultural landscape.’  The artist consultants brief is available on-line from Kerrier District Council’s website, visit http://www.kerrier.gov.uk/ for more information.  Deadline for submissions is 14:00 GMT 12th May 2008.

Heartlands Trails

We thought it would be a great idea to let those who would like to find out a bit more about the Heartlands Project to set some trails up on site so to give people the opportunity to have a self guided tour. We plan on putting up notice boards around Pool village and on site at Robinsons so to keep everyone informed on the latest developments of the project.

Please keep visiting the news page of our site for an update on when the trails will be displayed.

FANTASTIC NEWS!

We’ve received the fantastic news from the Big Lottery Fund that the Heartlands Project has been awarded over £22 million from the Living Landmark’s programme to transform the area into a world heritage site. Heartlands is the only award recipient in England and was one of only three projects to receive the final funding.

For the full story into the bid decision please click here to visit the Big Lotterys website.

BIG Lottery Living Landmarks visit Heartlands to assess Project

On June 13th and 14th the Heartlands Project had a 2 day assessment visit by a team from the BIG Lottery Living Landmarks. The assessment involved a site visit which included a light display from Anne Smyth. It is a celebratory light installation and is now up and running at Robinson’s shaft, projected on to the engine house and chimney; it will be running through out the night for an initial period of one year. The moving 20 metre projection will highlight Heartlands; the site and its heritage and we hope, herald a new era for the area.

The decision on whether or not the Heartlands Project receives funding will be announced in the Autumn. Please pay regular visits to the website for further updates.
